The word “ pharaoh “ is the Greek form of the Egyptian “ pero “ or “ per-a-a “, which was the designation for the royal residence and means “ Great House “. The king was also referred to as hm-f (“his majesty”). The terms which were most commonly used were nsw (“king”), ity (“sovereign”) and heqa (“ruler”). There are several ancient Egyptian words for king.
